What is an Executive MBA?
An Executive MBA (EMBA) is an MBA
tailored for working executives who already have a significant
amount of managerial experience. EMBA students are typically more
mature (average age, 36) and classes for this program are held
on weekends. Learning from one's peers, who represent a wide range
of industries, is an important component in the EMBA Program.
EMBA participants are also given the opportunity to examine their
companies and industries in depth through course work and projects.
How long does it take to get an EMBA?
The Ivey EMBA experience
is a 18-month, weekend based program. With the exception of
two mandatory in-residence periods, all classes take place outside
of normal working hours. The following diagram summarizes the
EMBA class schedule.

Is the Hong Kong EMBA different from
the program in Canada?
Aside from the
stronger emphasis on Asian case studies and doing business in
Asia, the Hong Kong EMBA is the same as the Canadian EMBA. The
professors and curriculum are the same. In fact, if you leave
Hong Kong before completing Year 1 of the course, you could transfer
and finish the course in Canada (subject to space availability).
The diploma you receive is the Master of Business Administration
from The University of Western Ontario, which is the same
whether you take the Hong Kong EMBA, Canadian EMBA, or Canadian
full-time MBA.
How long has your program been around?
The Ivey Business
School was established in 1920 and our full-time MBA program has
been offered since 1948 in London, Ontario. Our Canadian-based
Executive MBA program began in 1991 in the Toronto area and attracted
31 students to the first class. Within two years the section had
grown to 50 students per year, and in 1997 a second section was
added for a total annual intake of close to 110 highly qualified
individuals.
In 1995, Ivey launched
the EMBA Across Canada program with learning centres in seven
Canadian cities: London, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton
and Vancouver. We utilized leading-edge videoconference technology,
with split screen discussions and multiple site visibility, combined
with in-residence sessions. The first entering class had 37 students
and quickly grew to its capacity of 60 individuals. This section
was closed following the graduating class of 2002.
In August 1998,
Ivey launched its Hong Kong-based EMBA program. The Hong Kong
Class of 2000 consisted of 23 executives, and our current 2005
class has 49 participants. Their job responsibilities include
CEO, General Manager, Financial Controller, Vice President, Professor,
Regional Brand Manager, Chief Engineer, and Managing Director,
to name a few, and they represent a wide range of industries,
including electronics, finance, insurance, catering, conglomerate,
chemical, educational institution, technology, logistics, telecommunications,
IT and internet companies, manufacturing, transportation and health
services.
In March 2004, Ivey Canada launched
the EMBA Continental section with an intake of 52 students. The
modular format of this section, 4-day residence sessions each
month over a 16-month period, allows for students from outside
of Ontario to earn their MBA at Ivey in a classroom-based environment.
How much does your EMBA cost?
Tuition for our
August 2008 intake is HK$620,000. This is an all inclusive cost
(for participants base in Hong Kong), which includes tuition,
textbooks, all cases, course binders & class materials; both
in-residents accommodations, airfare to and from Canada for in-residence
period, all meals during class times; software packages &
Iveynet access. Travel expenses and any costs incurred while
working on class projects are the responsibility of the participant
and / or the sponsoring organization.
This amount is payable
in 6 installments. Special loans and scholarships are available.
