History & Overview

Richard Ivey School of Business at The University of Western Ontario is celebrating its 84th anniversary in 2003. Ivey offers degree programs through its campuses in London, Ontario; Toronto, Ontario; and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Since its establishment in 1920, Ivey has emphasized pragmatic and interactive learning, with real life cases being the centre of its learning philosophy. Ivey MBAs stand out worldwide by their decision making prowess, their ability to implement practical solutions and a capacity to move quickly into senior leadership positions. While Ivey faculty use a variety of learning methodologies throughout the two year program - lectures, role plays, field trips and simulations - it is the School’s emphasis on business cases and team-based learning that really changes the way students think and develops them into decision makers and future leaders. Students who choose Ivey are not simply looking for a degree to add to their resume; they are high achievers who have chosen to become leaders. Whether you choose to take your Ivey degree into a career in finance, consulting, marketing, human resources or technology, you will have the skills to work effectively in teams, to establish a global perspective and to think as a leader.

The Ivey MBA Program, Hong Kong

The Ivey MBA takes a general management perspective on today's hottest business issues and the challenges and opportunities in the key markets around the world. You become comfortable working in any functional area, without losing sight of the big picture. You sharpen your ability to formulate strategy and effect change. You learn from your mistakes. Quite simply, you learn to lead.

At the same time, Ivey hones teamwork skills. During your first year, working with a learning team of six to eight other students, you'll spend hours, even days, preparing cases and reports. In the process, you'll learn how to set goals, blend work styles, divide tasks, and set deadlines -- important skills in a business world moving toward project -- and team-based work.

At the end of two years, you will have forged business skills in the crucible of hundreds of business cases. Your assumptions will have been challenged and your perspectives broadened by interacting with a group of outstanding fellow students and faculty. You'll have learned to handle pressure, take risks, and make decisions.

Ivey's MBA in Hong Kong allows you to achieve these results while keeping your career moving by staying with your full-time job. All classes are conducted during non-work hours over a period of approximately two years. Our inaugural class will commence in January 2004. The Hong Kong MBA class schedule is demanding but manageable. Students attend most classes at Ivey’s state-of-the-art campus in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Courses are delivered in blocks of roughly three weeks, with classes held after working hours on weekday nights as well as on Saturdays and Sundays (click here for an overview class schedule) After each block, you have a break of two to three weeks to rebuild your energy and prepare for the next phase of the Program.

You will also participate in short, full-time residence periods in Hong Kong and at Ivey’s campus in Canada during the two-year program. For a more detailed summary of our Year 1 & Year 2 courses, please click here.

At the end of the program, you receive an MBA degree directly from The University of Western Ontario, exactly the same degree as our Canadian students.

The Case Method
The case method brings Ivey MBA candidates into contact with actual business challenges faced by managers at all levels in organizations. Cases provide an opportunity for you to analyze a situation, make a decision and formulate an action plan. Ivey’s cases are deliberately drawn from around the world so students can appreciate the special opportunities and issues faced by international businesses and are exposed to a multitude of markets, industry sectors, and business functions. During the two years of the MBA Program, you will work through hundreds of cases and learn first hand about successful strategies and management approaches, key markets in the world, and managing in large and small businesses. By confronting real problems and opportunities day in and day out during the Program, your decision-making skills and your ability to implement best practices are solidly developed.
