Ivey Hong Kong Raises Money to Build a School in China
Putting Ivey's mission statement into practice,
Ivey's Hong Kong EMBA class of 2004 raised $174,000 HK (just under
C$30,000) and chose to build a school in Mangde Village, Yunnan
Province, China through a charity organization called Sowers Action.
Along with four Ivey alumni, Kathleen Slaughter,
Associate Dean, Asia & Executive Director, Cheng Yu Tung Management
Institute, Richard Ivey School of Business and her husband, Ron
Slaughter traveled to the opening of the school last week.
The alumni are Benson Pau, Charity Au, Jody
Cheung and Edwin Luk. They were also accompanied by Dexter Young
of Sower's Action.
They flew to Kunming and then on to Lincang.
Then took a six-hour drive to Yungde. After a tour of the city
of 40,000 and a meal, the party transferred to a jeep for the
steep, final 45-minute climb to the school.
They met with the 180 children who attend
the school, as well as Mr. Xue, Mr. Li and Mr. Au, representing
the Education Department and the Communist Youth leagues and the
headmaster Mr. Yeong.
Seventy-six of the children live at the school
because their homes are too far away to walk every day. The children
range in age from pre-kindergarten to late elementary.
Their new school is a three-story concrete
building.
