Ivey’s history in China dates back to 1984, when the School launched the China Project to prepare students to visit Ivey, support visiting scholars, provide short-term instruction in China, and more. Our commitment to China was solidified in 1998 when Ivey became the first North American business school to establish a campus in China, the Cheng Yu Tung Management Institute. We also established the Asian Management Institute (now merged with another centre to create the International Business Institute) at our London, Canada campus in 1997 with the three-fold purpose of developing Asian educational material, recruiting Asia-specialized faculty members, and researching key Asian markets. These moves set the stage for increasing engagement in Asia on a number of levels, which continues today.

Ivey launched the China Project through a CIDA-sponsored partnership with Tsinghua University. The original phase of this project was a commitment to prepare Chinese MBA and PhD students to visit Ivey, study the basis of a market economy, work with visiting scholars, provide short-term instruction in China, and assist Tsinghua University in the development of its management faculty.

Ivey's interest in Asia gathers momentum, with the establishment of the Asian Management Institute (AMI), led by Paul Beamish. AMI leads research and case writing initiatives for Ivey with Asian themes.

1998
The Cheng Yu Tung Management Institute is officially opened in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, thanks to the generous support of Henry K.S. Cheng, HBA '71, MBA '72, LLD '97.
The Hong Kong Executive MBA program opens, with Joe DiStefano as its first Director.

Ivey is ranked by the Financial Times as one of the top 20 MBA programs in the world.
The first students of the Hong Kong Executive MBA program graduate in Western's first convocation outside of Canada.
Larry Wynant becomes Executive Director of the Cheng Yu Tung Management Institute and Ivey's first Associate Dean, Asia.

Ivey was ranked as the #1 Business School outside of the U.S. by The Wall Street Journal and rated in the top tier by Forbes, Business Week and the Financial Times.

Kathleen Slaughter becomes Executive Director of the Cheng Yu Tung Management Institute and Ivey's Associate Dean, Asia.

Ivey celebrates the 60th anniversary of both its MBA and Executive Development programs, the oldest in Canada, and the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Cheng Yu Tung Management Institute, Ivey's Hong Kong Campus.

Ivey welcomed the 50th class into the Executive MBA program, a program that has operated in Canada since 1991 and in Hong Kong since 1998.

Janet De Silva appointed Associate Dean of Ivey Asia.

Ivey won the inaugural Education Excellence Gold Award from the Canada China Business Council for expanding Canada’s relationship with China through education, research, alumni relations, and student and faculty exchanges.

Ivey won its second Gold Education Excellence Award from the Canada China Business Council for its achievements in expanding Canada’s relationship with China.

Professor Chris WH Chan appointed Ivey Business School's Associate Dean, Asia to lead the School in Asia.

Ivey’s Hong Kong Campus marks the end of its Executive MBA program as it commits focus to Executive Education and cases.
Ivey announces the establishment of Asia Case Centre, thanks to the generous contributions of Dr. Henry K.S. Cheng, HBA ’71, MBA ’72, LLD ’97, and Dr. Simon Tin-Yin Cua, EMBA ’05, LLD ’15.
